I might be missing something but is there a way to have a tree closed by default when shown?

I also am having this issue - does anyone know the answer?

Do you mean a tree node widget? If so, you can click on the icon to close it in the editor, and that should be the default.

If you mean a tree node in the sitemap, I think the answer is no.
